I was taking a walk today with my girlfriend and she was telling me how she used to go door to door selling greeting cards when she was a kid. So of course we started talking about how funny it would be to do affiliate marketing door to door. Now there are admittedly probably better uses of your time but you could actually earn some money doing this, or variations on it. With all the scenarios below, you would need to get approval from your affiliate network and possibly the merchant since all your leads would be coming from the same IP.
Scenario 1 – Aren't you a little old to sell girl scout cookies?
So basically what this would entail is taking your laptop with a wireless cell card around door to door and asking people to fill out whatever offer you were promoting. It could really be any offer…go knock on people's door and ask if they would like a free 30 second car insurance quote.
Scenario 2 – Salvation army without the bell ringing
This one might get you into trouble with the business you were standing in front of but you could stand in front of home depot with your laptop telling people to enter their email for the chance at a free $500 Home Depot gift card.
Scenario 3 – The flea market maverick
Set up shop at a local flea market. Sell some trinkets or whatever and have your laptop sitting there for people to fill out offers. If you can find some incentivizable offers you can offer them something right there on the spot for filling out your offer.
So would this be a good way to spend your time? Probably not the best no. You could potentially make some money doing this though, and it might be ok if you hired someone to do the actual leg work. This post was not really meant to suggest you go out and do these things, but rather think of creative ways to promote offers.
nice haha! i like Scenario 2 for sure! i deff think that one would work.
Scenario #2: seems like it’d be better to have a kid standing in front of best buy, target, etc, hand out flyers @$5/hr with URLs for various submits on it, on a Fri/Sat evening for max effectiveness.
This is a great post. A few years ago I actually came pretty close to trying #3. At the time, there were a bunch of VOIP companies all competing for business. I live in San Diego and got to thinking… lots of people south of the border in Mexico have relatives here and vice versa. Calling from Mexico is expensive and the way most of the people in the USA call home is via those overpriced calling cards. Anyway, the idea was to set up a booth at the local flea market near the border and get signups for Vonage and whatever else. They get a lot of foot traffic on Sat morning. I still think if you paid someone $8/hr to hang out there and get leads you could make some decent money.
